Major trauma is any injury that has the potential to cause prolonged disability or death. In Qatar, and the wider Gulf region, trauma is the leading cause of death and injury in the young adult population. As such, providing excellent trauma care is of central importance to what Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) does.

In 2007, the leadership of HMC envisioned the transformation of Hamad General Hospital (HGH) into a Level 1 Trauma Center, based on the highly regarded, evidence-based classification of the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma. Over the past decade the Trauma Section has developed into the highly respected and recognized Hamad Trauma Center, the anchor of the national Trauma System of Qatar. In 2014, the Trauma System was awarded Trauma Distinction accreditation from Accreditation Canada International, the only international accrediting body for trauma systems.

HMC’s Trauma System provides comprehensive care for trauma patients including pre-hospital care, emergency care in the trauma center and rehabilitation services. But our focus is not only on providing care for patients who have suffered a traumatic injury, we are deeply committed to improving safety and outcomes for all victims of injury within Qatar through our quality improvement, education and outreach programs, all supported by local data from our National Trauma Registry analyzed by the Clinical Research Unit and Hamad Injury Prevention Program.

The Trauma System’s vision for the future is to continue to provide service and improve outcomes as a national trauma system; a well distributed state-wide structure with active involvement of all healthcare and governmental services collaborating to decrease disability and death caused by traumatic injury in Qatar.
